There are lots of options when it comes to solar panels and roofs — some that actually involve ripping off your entire roof. If that doesn't sound appealing, Tesla (yes, the manufacturer of self-driving cars) is now offering Panasonic-made solar panels that would go on top of your existing roof. The company also offers a solar roof, which seems to only be economical for homes that already need new roofing
Unlike most other solar panel options, the Tesla panels have "integrated front skirts and no visible mounting hardware," according to Tesla. It'll still be obvious that you have solar energy on your roof, but it won't be a huge eyesore.
The new 325 watt panels will be manufactured by Panasonic at Tesla's factory in Buffalo for Tesla's exclusive use. Meaning, third-party installers or individuals won't be selling them — only Tesla. But the company plans to continue making less powerful 250-260 watt panels from other suppliers available, according to Electrek.
With the solar panels comes seamless integration with Powerwall, a box that "charges with energy produced by solar panels, making that energy available when needed, day or night," Tesla noted. Powerwall also enables your solar panels to produce energy during outages.
