7-Zip Manual Instructions

By C. Taylor

The compression program 7-Zip performs two primary functions. It can compress files into an archive format, and it can extract archive files. When you install 7-Zip, it also installs a shell interface that grants access to 7-Zip via Windows Explorer's context menu. This feature allows you to automatically create and extract archives without ever opening 7-Zip directly. However, 7-Zip also allows you to manually create and extract archives using the "7-Zip File Manager."

Creating Archives

Step 1

Open 7-Zip File Manager.

Step 2

Navigate to the files you wish to include in your archive. Click the top drop-down menu, which spans the width of the window, to choose a drive. Click the folder icon to the left of the drop-down menu to navigate into a parent folder. Double-click a folder in the main window to enter that folder.

Step 3

Hold the "Ctrl" key and click multiple files to select them.

Step 4

Click "Add" on the top toolbar to open the "Add to Archive" window.

Step 5

Enter the name for your archive in the "Archive" field. Click the "..." button to select a save location.

Step 6

Click the "Archive Format" drop-down menu and select your preferred compression format. "Zip" is more common and compatible with other archival programs, but "7z" offers better compression.

Step 7

Enter a password in the "Encryption" fields, if you want to password-protect your archive.

Step 8

Click "OK" to create the archive.

Extracting Archive

Step 1

Open 7-Zip File Manager.

Step 2

Click the archive you wish to extract.

Step 3

Click the "Extract" button on the top toolbar.

Step 4

Click the "..." button to choose an extraction location.

Step 5

Click "OK" to extract the archive.
