About Blank Virus Removal

By Thomas King

The About Blank virus, commonly referred to as the About: Blank virus, is a browser hijacker that changes your web browser settings and causes all sorts of associated problems. The About Blank virus can be removed automatically or manually depending on your resources and your level of computer knowledge.

The About Blank virus is also known as the About: Blank virus, the AboutBlank virus, and the HomeOldSP virus. It is a variant of the more advanced Cool Web Search hijacker and it is sometimes referred to generically as a browser hijacker.

Type of Virus

The About Blank virus is a browser hijacker. A browser hijacker, also known as hijackware, is a type of malware that changes your Internet settings for the purpose of redirecting all of your Internet searches to websites that you did not intend on visiting. These websites are often pornographic or malicious and can sometimes lead to additional viruses infecting your computer. Your computer may become infected with a browser hijacker through a malicious email link or attachment, a peer-to-peer file sharing program, or a drive-by download (a program that is automatically downloaded to your computer without your permission).

The main symptom of the About Blank virus is that it redirects your web browser. In other words, every time you do an Internet search, your web browser is redirected to a random website. Sometimes, the website is a blank page, hence the name of the virus. In addition to redirecting your web browser, the About Blank virus may change your Internet homepage, add icons to your desktop, slow your computer, flood your computer with unsolicited pop-up advertisements, and cause your computer to reboot.

Automatic Removal

The About Blank virus can be removed with an up-to-date antivirus program. This includes a fee antivirus program, such as AVG Free Anti-virus, BitDefender Free Edition, and Windows Defender. However automatically removing browser hijackers, such as the About Blank virus, can be tricky. This is because browser hijackers will often prevent you from accessing security websites and sometimes may even disable your antivirus program. Thus, you may need to download an antivirus program on a separate computer and load it onto your computer.

Manual Removal

The About Blank virus can be removed manually. Manually removing the About Blank virus requires you to end malicious processes, unregister infected Dynamic Link Library (DLL) files, delete associated files, and remove associated registry entries. Manually removing a virus is a technical process that should not be undertaken unless you are confident that you know what you are doing. In particular, removing associated registry entries can be dangerous. This is because removing associated registry entries involves using the Registry Editor and, according to Microsoft, "Using the Registry Editor incorrectly can cause serious, system-wide problems that may require you to re-install Windows to correct them."
