Alternate Way to Check Hotmail Mail

By Eric Som

Windows Live Hotmail is a free email service provided by Microsoft that allows Internet users to not only send and receive emails, but also to incorporate other prominent Windows Live features, such as Windows Live Messenger, Spaces, Bing Search and MSN Home. One of the benefits of using Windows Live Hotmail is that it is compatible with the POP3 protocol, a protocol that allows email users to use their email on other platforms.

Creating a Gmail Email Account

Create a Gmail email account by visiting the Gmail homepage (see "Resources"). Gmail is a free email service offered by Google. One of the benefits of using Gmail, as opposed to other email services, is that Gmail users can enable POP3 access that would allow them to check several email accounts, including Windows Live Hotmail email, on the Gmail platform without needing to log into several email accounts. Once on the Gmail homepage, select the “Create an account” button located under the “New to Gmail? It's free and easy” phrase. You will be redirected to another page where you will need to enter your information, choose your email address, agree to the Gmail terms and conditions and create a Gmail account.

Enabling POP3 Access to Check Windows Live Hotmail E-mail

Check your Windows Live Hotmail mail by enabling POP3 access in your Gmail account. To do so, simply click on “Settings” located on the top right-hand corner while logged into your Gmail account. You will be routed to the “Settings” page where you should select the “Accounts” tab. Click on the “Add POP3 email account” button located next to the “Check mail using POP3” row. Once you click on the “Add POP3 email account” button, another window should open; enter your Windows Live Hotmail email address in the “email address” field, then select the “Next step” button. You will be redirected to another page where you will need to provide your Windows Live Hotmail credentials. Enter Windows Live Hotmail password. Under the POP server field, enter pop3.live.com and Port 995 as the server address and port number for Windows Live Hotmail. If you would like to leave original copies of your email in Windows Live Hotmail, select the “Leave a copy of retrieved message on the server” option. If you do not select this option, all messages downloaded from Windows Live Hotmail will be removed from your Hotmail account. Once you have provided all the credentials, click on the “Add account” button to start checking your Windows Live Hotmail email on Gmail.
