Can You Hook Up an iPad to a TV and Watch Netflix?
Netflix updated its iPad application to stream video through the iPad's data port in May 2010. All you need to watch movies on your TV are the iPad audio/video connections. Apple offers HDMI, composite, VGA and component video cables. Older TVs may only have composite. Newer TVs have High-Definition Multimedia Interface and/or component video ports. Some TVs also have VGA ports for connecting the TV as a monitor. You can use any of these connections to stream Netflix from your iPad to your TV, but only HDMI supports mirroring the iPad screen on the TV.
Things You'll Need
- Apple VGA adapter
- Apple component AV cable
- Apple composite AV cable
- Apple digital AV adapter
- HDMI cable
Check the specifications for your television to determine what type of connections are available. You can also check with the manufacturer, or just look at the back panel of your TV. Composite video connections are yellow; component connections are red, green and blue. HDMI connections are flat and recessed into the TV. VGA connections are trapezoid shaped and have screw-in connectors on either side of the port.
Purchase the appropriate adapter for your chosen available connection.
Plug the 30 pin end of the connector into the data port on your iPad. If you are using HDMI, plug the HDMI cable into the port on the video adapter.
Plug the other end of the cable into the audio/video input port on your TV. The cables and ports are color coded. Match the color on the cable connector to the color on the jack.
Turn on your TV and change the source to the iPad connection. If you are using an HDMI cable, the iPad screen will mirror on the TV screen. Other connections will remain blank until you start playing a movie.
Open the Netflix application on your iPad and select a movie. The TV will switch to the video feed from the iPad as soon as playback starts.
Tips & Warnings
- Many TVs have multiple inputs for each connection type. If you are using composite, component or VGA, make sure you plug the all connectors into the correct input.
