Can You Limit the Amount of Posts You Get From a Facebook Friend?

By Carolyn Luck

Facebook members post comments, status updates and photos to connect and share with friends online. With each view of your wall, your Facebook news feed displays your friends' posts. You adjust your preferences to control the amount and type of content you see in your news feed. If you want to limit the amount of posts you get from a particular friend, you have several options.

News Feed Filters

Limit the amount of content that appears in your news feed by applying a filter. Sign in to your account and click twice the "Most Recent" option that appears next to the "News Feed" heading at the top of your home page. Click the "Edit Options" link that appears at the bottom of the drop-down menu. In the resulting dialog box, click the "Friends And Pages You Interact With Most" option to limit the number of posts you get from friends with whom you have little interaction. Click the "Save" button to apply filter. Additional filtering options include "Status Updates," "Photos," "Links," "Pages" and "Questions." You can also adjust your filters to show "Top News" or "Most Recent" posts. To hide all posts from a friend, click the "X" that appears next to a single post on your wall. Click the "Hide All By [name]" to hide all future posts by that friend. Filtered friends will still be able to comment on your posts, tag you in photos and access your profile, and you can still see posts that appear on friends' walls.

Privacy Settings

Limit the number of posts you get from friends by adjusting your privacy settings. Sign in to your Facebook account and click the "Account" tab in the upper right corner of any page. Click the "Privacy Settings" option from the drop-down menu and select the "Customize Settings" option that appears on the resulting page. Open the drop-down menu for the "Permission To Comment On Your Posts" option in the "Things Others Share" section. Select "Customize" and type the name of the friend you wish to limit in the "Hide This From" box. Click the "Save Setting" button to apply the filter. Note that unchecking the "Friends Can Post On My Wall" option will prevent any friends' posts from appearing on your wall.

Friend Lists

Use Facebook friend lists to control the number of posts you see in your News Feed. Sign in to your Facebook account and click the "Friends" link that appears in the left sidebar of your home page. Click the "Manage Friend List" button followed by the "Create A List" button. Use the resulting dialog box to select the friends whose posts you do not wish to limit. Type a name for the list in the space provided, and click the "Create List" button. Now you can filter your news feed to show only posts from the friends that appear on that list. Change your filter options to limit, eliminate and resume the appearance of friends' posts on your wall.

Block Lists

In extreme cases, use the "Block" feature to eliminate the number of posts you receive from a Facebook friend. Note that blocking a friend removes all connections and prevents you from viewing his profile, and he yours. Neither of you will have the ability to search for the other, and you'll both lose all access to each other's pages. Blocking goes beyond limiting a friends' Facebook presence; it eliminates it altogether. Sign in to your Facebook account and click the "Account" tab in the upper right corner. Select the "Privacy Settings" option and click the "Edit Your Lists" option that appears in the "Block Lists" section at the bottom of the resulting page. Type the name or email address of the person you wish to block in the space provided and click the "Block Button." Locate the user's picture in the resulting dialogue box and click the "Block" button to submit.
