How Can I Tell If I Have Internet Explorer 7 or 8?

By Aaron Wein

Internet Explorer 8 includes minute improvements over the browser's seventh iteration, many unnoticeable to the average user. So, understandably, it can be difficult to determine exactly which version you are using, especially since the user-interfaces are practically identical. Like most programs, Internet Explorer includes an "About" section, which displays various information about the browser including its product key, edition and version. You can view whether you have the seventh or eighth version in this section of the browser.

Step 1

Run Internet Explorer.

Step 2

Click "Help" or press "Alt" and "H" to access the "Help" menu bar.

Step 3

Click "About Internet Explorer" from the bottom of the "Help" menu bar. A window opens.

Step 4

Read the first number of the "Version" line in the "About" dialog box. The number indicates your version.
