How Do I Block Other People From Stealing My Internet Connection?

By Cory Lewis

Wireless Internet connections have varying levels of security. The lowest level does not have any password at all, meaning any person in range can connect and use that Internet. Wired Equivalent Privacy (WEP) is an older method and is not very secure anymore. The next level is Wi-Fi Protected Access (WPA or WPA2). This is the recommended security method. You can secure your Internet connection in just a few quick steps.

Step 1

Click the Start button and go to "Control Panel." Click "Network and Internet" and then "Network Sharing Center."

Step 2

Select "Set up a new connection or network." Choose "Manually connect to a wireless network" and then click "Next."

Step 3

Select WPA2 on the "Enter information for the wireless network you want to add page" under "Security Type." Complete the rest of the page and then click "Next."

Step 4

Click "Change connection settings." Click "OK" and then "Close."
