How do I Install Bluetooth Technology on My Laptop?

By Ryan Maxwell

Bluetooth is a wireless, radio-based technology that allows you to connect two devices. The connection process, known as "syncing" or "pairing," creates a secure link between two devices, allowing data transfer speeds that are comparable to Wi-Fi. Several laptop manufacturers offer laptops with integrated Bluetooth technology, but if your laptop doesn't have built-in Bluetooth, you can still connect Bluetooth devices by using a USB device known as a Bluetooth dongle.

Things You'll Need

  • Bluetooth dongle
  • Driver disc

Step 1

Insert the Bluetooth dongle into an open USB port on your laptop.

Step 2

Insert the driver disc into your optical drive. Follow the on-screen instructions to complete the installation process for the software driver.

Step 3

Set your laptop and your Bluetooth device to "discovery mode." To turn on "discovery mode" on your computer, open the "Control Panel" and double-click the "Bluetooth Devices" icon. Click the "Options" tab then click the "Turn Discovery On" checkbox. See the user manual for details on activating "discovery mode" for the Bluetooth device.
