By Faizah Imani

In order for you to use certain types of applications on your laptop you must have Java software installed on your computer. Java technology allows you to do things such as play online games, interact in Java enabled chat rooms, use interactive forms and even view streaming media. The Java software can be installed for free. Depending upon the speed of your laptop, it will likely take five minutes or less to install.

Step 1

Disable any Internet firewalls that may be enabled on your computer. To disable your firewall, locate the firewall icon in your computer's system tray. Right-Click on the firewall and select the "Disable" option. If you don't have an icon in your system tray, click on your Windows "Start" button and select "Programs" or "All Programs." Open the firewall program and click on the option to "Disable."

Step 2

Visit Oracle's Java website. Click on the "Free Java Download" button.

Step 3

View the operating system requirements to ensure that your computer meets the requirements for the latest version of Java. For example, for Java "Version 6 Update 21" you must be using Windows Server 2003/2008, Windows XP/2000, Windows Vista or Windows 7. If your computer meets the requirements for the latest Java version click on the "Agree & Start Free Download" button. If your computer does not meet the system requirements for the latest version, click on the link that is labeled "All Java Downloads Here" to view versions of Java that have different system requirements.

Step 4

Click the "Run" button when prompted. If you select the "Save" button the download will be saved to your computer so that you can run the software installation at a later time.

Step 5

Click on the "Install" button.

Step 6

Read through the software terms and conditions. Click the "Next" button to indicate your agreement to the terms and conditions.

Step 7

Wait as the software automatically installs on your computer. You will receive a message indicating that the installation is complete. Click the "Close" button to exit the installation window.
