How Do I Know If My Processor Is Working Correctly?

By James Wright

The processor of a computer is the most important piece of hardware in the system. It is essentially the "brain" of the computer that controls and manages all the processes that occur. Because it is the most important piece of hardware and how it affects the system as a whole, it is important to keep it running properly. Sometimes it may be necessary to verify whether it is working properly, which can easily be done from the Device Manager.

Step 1

Right-click on My Computer and select "Manage." If you do not have this icon on your desktop, click "Start" and right-click on My Computer to get the same menu.

Step 2

Click on "Device Manager," then click the box next to the "Processors" category to open the list. It is okay if there is more than one processor in the list.

Step 3

Right-click on the processor(s) under the list and select "Properties." Under the "Device status" section, you will see whether or not your device is working properly, and if it is not, the option to troubleshoot it. From here you can also update the drivers if necessary.

Tips & Warnings

  • Modifying or changing any settings within the Device Manager utility is not recommended unless you know what you are doing, or are being assisted by a technical support specialist.
