How Do I Play Streaming Video on My Television?
Many people don't know that you can actually watch streaming video from your computer on your television just by attaching a few extra wires. Streaming video content is available from a variety of sources on the Internet. With a few minutes effort, you will be able to watch Youtube videos, your favorite television shows, and a wealth of other streaming content on your television while you relax on the couch.
Things You'll Need
- Computer or laptop with either S-Video or DVI output
- Internet connection
- S-video cable or HDMI cable
- HDMI to DVI adapter
- Mini Plug to RCA Y-splitter
Determine the video output connection options available on your computer or laptop. In order to watch streaming video in acceptable video quality, you will need a computer or laptop with either an S-Video or a DVI output. Some computers will offer both connections. In the "Resources" section of this article, you can find a link to a picture clearly showing what S-Video and DVI connections look like.
Find the input connections on your television set. These connections are usually located on the back of your television but newer models may offer alternative input connections on the front of the television. Find either an S-Video connection that will look identical to the one on your computer or an HDMI input connection. HDTV compatible televisions will always have at least one HDMI input. In the "Resources" section of this article, you can find a link to a picture showing what an HDMI input will look like.
If your computer has a DVI output and your television has a HDMI input, connect one end of the HDMI cable to your television. Connect the other end of the HDMI cable to the HDMI to DVI adapter. The adapter will snap on to the end of the HDMI cable. Insert the DVI adapter into the DVI output on your computer or laptop. If your computer or television does not have HDMI or DVI connections, use an S-Video cable to connect the S-Video connections on the computer and television. You will only use the S-Video cable if you are unable to use an HDMI cable because the HDMI offers you the highest quality picture with the most resolution.
Connect the mini plug end of the Mini Plug to RCA Y-splitter to the audio output of your computer. This is where you would normally attach headphones to your computer. Connect the other end of the Mini Plug to RCA Y-splitter to the audio input on your television. Newer televisions will offer multiple audio inputs. Use the input that corresponds to the video input used in Step 3.
Press the input button on your television and change the input until you see your computer screen on the television. Open the Web browser on your computer and stream the video of your choice. You are now able to enjoy streaming video from your computer on your television.
