How Do I Set Capital Letters on an iPad?

By Julius Vandersteen

The virtual keyboard on Apple’s iPad Air works similarly to a physical keyboard, but it doesn't have a caps lock key. A shift key is located on either side of the keyboard and is identified by an arrow that points upward. You can use the shift key to activate caps lock after you enable the feature in the Settings app. The keyboard is available in any app on the iPad that supports text input, including Mail, Messages, Notes, Safari and many others.

Step 1

Press the “Home” button located below the screen of your iPad.

Step 2

Tap the “Settings” icon on the home screen.

Step 3

Tap “General” and select "Keyboard."

Step 4

Move the toggle switch next to the “Enable Caps Lock” option to the On position.

Step 5

Press the “Home” button to return to the iPad’s home screen.

Step 6

Open one of the apps that uses the virtual keyboard. Tap the "Shift" key twice to enable the caps lock feature. Tap the shift key once more to disable caps lock. Tap the "Shift" key one time to capitalize only the next single letter you type.

Tips & Warnings

  • A straight horizontal line appears under the arrow on the shift key when caps lock is activated.
