How to Access an HP Pavilion Recovery Partition

By Tyson Cliffton

Accessing the recovery partition on your HP Pavilion laptop allows you to restore your computer to speed it up, eliminate a virus or repair your Windows operating system. The Recovery Manager program makes it possible to restore your laptop to its settings as of a previous date or restore your computer to its original factory settings, which will erase all of your installed programs and personal data. Using the recovery partition allows you to bypass the hassle of keeping track of recovery discs, which could be damaged in storage, rendering them useless when you need them.

Access Recovery Manager During Windows Startup

Step 1

Turn on or restart your HP Pavilion laptop.

Step 2

Press "F11" when the "Pressfor recovery" message appears during the HP Pavilion boot process.

Step 3

Select "Recovery Manager" from your list of recovery options and press "Enter." The Recovery Manger program will open on your screen, and you can begin the recovery process.

Access Recovery Manager Within Windows

Step 1

Click the "Start" icon or "Start" button in the lower left corner of your Windows home screen.

Step 2

Click "All Programs" and then "Recovery Manager."

Step 3

Click "Recovery Manager" again to open the Recovery Manager program on your HP Pavilion laptop.

Tips & Warnings

  • If you press the "F11" button during the Windows boot process while the "Pressfor recovery" message appears on the screen, and you are not redirected to the list of recovery options, let your computer finish the boot process before either shutting down or restarting your HP Pavilion laptop and repeating the process until you access the list of recovery options. You could also access the Recovery Manager from Windows. Shutting down or restarting your computer during the boot process could render your hard drive unstable or unusable.
  • Make sure you back up all of the personal data before accessing your HP Pavilion recovery partition with the intent of restoring your laptop to its settings as of a previous date or to its original factory settings.
  • If you or someone else who uses the laptop has erased the recovery partition in an effort to create more usable space on the hard drive in the HP Pavilion laptop, the Recovery Manager will no longer be a recovery option. To restore your laptop to its settings as of a previous date or to its original factory settings, you will need to use the Microsoft System Restore program or a set of Windows recovery discs. HP Pavilion laptops that were purchased with a recovery partition do not come with a set of recovery discs; recovery discs must be created by the user.
