How to Access Cell Phone Reserves

By Frances Todd

Almost every cell phone user has experienced it. You grab your phone to make a call or send a text message, only to see the flashing battery icon. To make things worse, you don't have your charger nearby. Fortunately, on some phone brands, such as Nokia, there is as function called "half rate codec." Enabling that function can give you up to 50 percent extra battery power on your phone.

Step 1

Turn on your phone. Some phones shut off automatically when the battery gets low. If that happens, restart your phone and, as long as the battery is not completely dead, it should turn on long enough for you to access the half rate codec.

Step 2

Dial *#4720#. That's the star sign, then pound sign, followed by 4720, followed by another pound sign.

Step 3

Restart your phone. This should happen automatically after you key in the code. When the phone comes back on, it will tap into the battery's reserve and show a 50 percent increase in battery power.

Tips & Warnings

  • Don't worry about the reserve; it will get recharged along with the battery the next time you charge your phone.
  • There is a widespread belief that dialing *3370# will restart the phone and tap into the battery reserve, but this has been disputed and attributed to a different feature of certain brands that can actually drain battery power.
  • This code is not something to be used constantly or in place of charging your battery. It should be used in an emergency situation because call quality suffers when you use the reserve.
