How to Access NETGEAR Routers

By Gregory Hamel

Routers are computer networking devices that accept an incoming Internet connection and send or route data to computers connected to the router. Routers can allow several computers to connect to the Internet through a single Internet connection. Wireless routers allow many computers in a local area to access the Internet without the use of cords. Routers have administrative setup panels that can be accessed to configure router settings. NETGEAR is a popular router brand.

Things You'll Need

  • NETGEAR router

Step 1

Open a web browser.

Step 2

Type the router's IP address into the browser's address bar and press "Enter." Default IP addresses for NETGEAR routers are http://192.168.0.1 and http://192.168.1.1. A popup will appear asking for a user name and password when you enter the correct IP address. Try http://192.168.0.1 and if the popup does not appear, use http://192.168.1.1.

Step 3

Enter your router's user name and password and click "Ok." If you have never set up router security in the past, use the default user name and password (admin and password) and then click "Ok." Your browser will access the router's administrate panel.

Tips & Warnings

  • After accessing your NETGEAR router's administrative panel you can change settings options such as wireless security. NETGEAR recommends that users secure wireless connections with WPA/WPA2 (See resources.).
  • If you make any changes to your router's settings make sure to save the changes before exiting the administrate panel or the settings will not take effect.
