How to Activate OneNote

By Kathryn Hatter

Microsoft OneNote seeks to replace the old-fashioned spiral notebook with a convenient location on your computer to jot notes and ideas, write reminders to yourself and keep yourself organized. Whether you are a student, a professional or a stay-at-home mom or dad, you can find plenty of ways to use OneNote as an all-purpose place to hold your important information. After you install this program, activate it in order to use it to its fullest capabilities.

Things You'll Need

  • Microsoft product key

Step 1

Locate your product key. Find this 25-digit number on the CD case if you purchased a CD or in a confirmation email if you purchased OneNote over the Internet.

Step 2

Open the OneNote program for the first time. You do not need to activate the program immediately, but you must activate it within 25 uses or OneNote will stop working with full functionality.

Step 3

Choose to activate OneNote by either Internet or telephone within the Activation Wizard. If you decide to activate over the Internet, enter the product key, and the program will validate it automatically at the Microsoft website. If you activate over the telephone, you must select your country in the Activation Wizard and then call the telephone number furnished to you. Give the service representative your installation identification (find this on your computer screen), and you will receive a confirmation identification number. Enter this confirmation identification number in the Activation Wizard and press "Enter" to finish activating OneNote.
