How to Activate Touchpad Scroll

By Richard Schupp

The touchpad on a laptop is a great substitute for an external mouse. The touchpad emulates every function of the mouse, even the scrolling option that the mouse offers with its scrolling wheel. By touching the sides of the touchpad, you can scroll on windows that have a scroll bar on the side or on the bottom. You may have to activate this feature before it can be used. You can do so through the Mouse settings in the Control Panel.

Step 1

Click the "Start" button in the bottom-left corner of your desktop to open the Start Menu.

Step 2

Click "Control Panel," and then click "Hardware and Sound." Click "Mouse" under the "Devices and Printers" heading in the Hardware and Sound window.

Step 3

Click the "Gestures" tab if you are using Windows XP and the "Function" tab if you are using Vista or 7.

Step 4

Click the check box next to "Use Scroll Function." A check in the box will activate this feature. Click the "Apply" button, and then click "OK" to close the window.
