How to Add a PDF to iBooks

By Sophie Southern

Apple's iBooks, which was released with the iOS 4.3 operating system update, brought much-needed PDF support to Apple devices such as the iPhone, iPod Touch and iPad. Prior to iBooks, you could view PDFs on compatible devices, but you had to use a third-party application to store or save them. IBooks is compatible with e-books and PDFs, allowing you to import your own content on top of e-books from the iTunes Store.

Step 1

Open "iTunes" on your computer.

Step 2

Select "File" from the top menu bar, then select "Add to Library."

Step 3

Locate the PDF on your computer that you want to add to iBooks, and click the "Open" button. Your PDF will automatically import to the "Books" playlist in the left column of the iTunes application window.

Step 4

Connect your Apple device to your computer, and click the device icon in the left column of the iTunes application window. Click the "Books" tab, and verify that you have the "Sync Books" box checked.

Step 5

Check the box next to your PDF files if you have your device set to sync selected books. Click the "Apply" button to sync your device, save your changes and import your PDF. PDFs appear in the PDF section of your iBooks library.
