How to Add an Alternate Name On Facebook

By Techwalla Contributor

Facebook requires that all users open accounts under their real names. If you want to list your maiden name to help former classmates and old friends find you or if you use a nickname in your daily life, add the information as an alternate name on your account.

Step 1

Log in to your Facebook account. Click the arrow in the upper right corner of the page. Select "Account Settings" from the drop-down menu.

Step 2

Click "General" in the left column. The topmost Account Setting is your name. Click "Edit" to the right of your name.

Step 3

If you need only to add your middle name, do it in the box provided. This change does not display on your profile immediately. Facebook confirms all name changes before displaying them. According to the site, allow 24 hours for the change to appear.

Step 4

Add a maiden name or nickname in the box next to "Alternate name." Place a check mark in the box next to "Include this on my profile" to display the alternate name immediately behind your real name on your profile. If you don't check this box, the alternate name can be found in searches but it doesn't display on your profile page.

Step 5

Enter your Facebook password. Click "Save Changes."
