By Techwalla Contributor

Screen resolution allows you to increase or decrease the size of items on your desktop. Based on your computer's video card, and monitor, you have the ability to adjust the screen resolution. Windows 7 has a few different ways to adjust screen resolution.

Step 1

Right-click anywhere on the desktop and select the "Screen Resolution" option from the menu. Use the "Resolution" options to select the resolution for your desktop. When the correct resolution is selected that matches your hardware and software requirements, you will see the word "recommended." Start off using this resolution before you decide to make further adjustments.

Step 2

Right-click anywhere on the desktop and select the "Personalize" option from the menu. Under the "See Also" list in the bottom left-hand corner of the window, select the "Display" option. Select the "Adjust Resolution" option to adjust the size of items on your desktop. Start by using the recommended resolution before you make any further adjustments.

Step 3

Click on the "Start" button and select the "Control Panel" option. Select the "Appearance and Personalization" option. Under the category of Display, select the "Adjust Screen Resolution."
