How to Back Up an iPad

By Stephanie D

You should back up your iPad frequently to help prevent the loss of personal information, iPad application data and any settings for the iPad, in case the iPad malfunctions or has problems later. You can use iPad backups as restore points after software updates or transferring data to another device, and you can organize and manage your backups in iTunes.

Things You'll Need

  • iPad connector cable

Step 1

Open iTunes on your computer. iTunes manages and stores iPad backups.

Step 2

Connect the iPad to the computer with the iPad connector cable.

Step 3

Turn on the iPad. The iPad should appear in the "Devices" section in the left panel of iTunes. You can set iTunes to automatically back up your iPad every time it syncs with iTunes.

Step 4

Right-click the iPad in "Devices."

Step 5

Select "Backup" from the context menu to back up your iPad. iTunes will automatically create a backup of your iPad settings within iTunes.

Tips & Warnings

  • Make sure you have the most up-to-date version of iTunes before making an iPad backup.
