How to Back Up Phone Numbers From an iPhone

By Art Corvelay

Many people rely on their iPhone to do much more than merely make and receive phone calls. You can use the calendar to schedule meetings and events. You can also use your iPhone as an electronic address book to store the contact information of your friends, family and co-workers. It is always good practice to have that information stored in more than one place. If you want to back up your contact information, including phone numbers from your iPhone, you can simply use iTunes, along with the tools built into your operating system.

Things You'll Need

  • Latest version of iTunes

Step 1

Update iTunes to the latest version if you have not updated recently. To find out if you need to update, launch iTunes and click "File" followed by "Check for updates." If you are on a Mac, click "iTunes" followed by "Check for updates." If you do not have the latest version installed, a dialog box will appear asking you if you want to download the latest version. Click the "Download iTunes" button.

Step 2

Connect your iPhone to your computer using the USB cable that came with your iPhone. iTunes will automatically recognize your iPhone and an icon will appear in the left-hand column of iTunes.

Step 3

Click the iPhone icon and the "Summary" pane will appear.

Step 4

Click the "Contacts" tab located across the top of iTunes.

Step 5

Click the check box next to the "Sync contacts with" field.

Step 6

Click the drop-down menu in the "Sync contacts with" field and select a program to sync your contacts with. If you are on a Windows machine, you can choose from four options: Yahoo! address book, Windows address book, Google contacts, or Outlook. If you are on a Mac, your contacts will be synced with the Address Book utility.

Step 7

Click the "Sync" button and all of the contacts on your iPhone will be saved to your computer's address book. Included in every contact will be the contact's phone number. Subsequent syncing will add any new contacts you have entered manually on your iPhone.
