How to Block Ads & Pop Ups

As you browse the Internet using your web browser, you are likely to run into pop-up ads, as well as banner ads on certain websites. These ads can irritate you and often seem to pop up at the most inopportune times. Some of these ads can also contain viruses. Depending on which browser you are using, there are ways to block these pop-up ads from appearing on your computer, as well as prevent some other types of ads from showing up on the websites you view.

Internet Explorer

Step 1

Open your Internet Explorer browser window.

Step 2

Click on "Tools" in the upper right-hand side of your browser.

Step 3

Hover the mouse over the "Pop-up Blocker" option.

Step 4

Click "Turn on pop-up blocker" to toggle it on.

Firefox

Step 1

Open your Firefox browser window.

Step 2

Click on the "Firefox" button at the top of the page. This button will be marked "Tools" in Windows XP.

Step 3

Click "Options" and click on the "Content" tab.

Step 4

Check the box for "Block pop-up windows."

Step 5

Click the "Exceptions" box to set any sites for which you would like to accept pop-ups, such as your banking site.

Safari

Step 1

Click on "Safari" in the menu bar.

Step 2

Move the mouse over the "Block Pop-Up Windows" link.

Step 3

Click the "Block Pop-Up Windows" link.

Tips & Warnings

  • Third-party pop-up blockers can also be installed onto your computer to block pop-ups and ads in all browsers without setting them individually.
