By Contributing Writer

Google Maps is a web-based mapping application that provides interactive, detailed maps of the U.S. and Canada. Google Maps includes a variety of tools, including satellite maps, map scaling (up to street maps), route planning, travel directions, business locations and distance measurements.

Step 1

Go to the Google Maps website.

Step 2

Click the "My Maps" tab.

Step 3

Click on "Distance Measurement Tool" under "Featured Content."

Step 4

Using the scale bar on the left side of the map area, zoom the map to the desired level of details (e.g. country, state, etc.).

Step 5

Place the cursor on the map. While holding the left mouse button, drag the map to the desired region.

Step 6

Click on the first point on the map, then on the second one. The distance between the points should be displayed on the left panel, in miles or feet.

Step 7

Click the "Reset" button and repeat Step 6 (and Steps 4 and 5, if necessary) to take another measurement.
