How to Calculate Overseas Shipping Costs

Shipping packages overseas can get quite get expensive, so before you send a package, it’s a good idea to compare shipping companies and determine how much each company's service will cost you. Go online to calculate any shipping costs for three of the main worldwide shipping companies—the United States Postal Service, UPS and FedEx.

United States Postal Service

Step 1

Log on to the USPS website. (See Resources) Click the “Calculate Postage” tab in red at the top of the screen. Click “Go” under “Calculate International Postage” to determine your overseas shipping costs.

Step 2

Select the country to which you’ll be sending the package. The shipping costs vary, depending on how far you are sending it. Click the drop-down menu next to “Select a Destination.”

Step 3

Select the service you want to use if you are using a flat rate box.This will determine how long it will take the package to get there. To view information about each service, click the question mark next to each choice. Each type of box has a maximum weight amount. Alternatively, if you have a scale at home, select the shape and enter the weight of your package. Click “Continue.”

Step 4

View the price charts. It will show the shipping costs and delivery time for the type of box you choose to ship in. The cost is cheaper if you purchase postage online.

UPS

Step 1

Log on to the UPS website. (See Resources) Click the “Shipping” tab at the top of the screen and select “Calculate Time & Cost.”

Step 2

Select “Detailed Time and Cost” under “What Kind of Quote Do You Want?” This will tell you how much it’s going to cost you to send a package overseas. Under section 2, select your origin country, city and ZIP code. Then select the destination country, city and ZIP code. Under “Destination Type,” select the type of address to which you will be shipping.

Step 3

Select a date when you'll be shipping the package. Under section 3, select the type of packaging and approximate weight. Under "Additional Information," select how you will ship the package. The time and cost summary page will show you each type of available service and the cost for and delivery time for each.

FedEx

Step 1

Log on to the FedEx website. (See Resources) Click the “Ship” tab at the top and select “Get Rates & Transit Times.”

Step 2

Select the country and ZIP code of origin for the package. Then select the destination country and ZIP code. Under “Additional Information,” choose either to schedule a pickup or drop off your FedEx package. Select a ship date.

Step 3

Click “Get Detailed Quote” to view the shipping costs for your specific package. Enter an approximate weight and select a package type. Click “Continue.” The rates and transit times will be displayed below before each available shipping service.
