How to Calculate the Perfect Height to Mount Your TV

By Rebecca Johnson

The best height to mount a flat screen television is eye-level. If you hang the TV too high, you will strain your neck; if you hang it too low, it will look awkward in the room. Many professionals hang televisions at 2/12 to 3 feet; however, you need to figure out the height that suits your family the best. To do this, use a piece of cardboard to determine the best location. You should also consider reflections from windows and lighting when hanging the television.

Things You'll Need

  • Cardboard
  • Tape
  • Pencil

Step 1

Cut a piece of sturdy cardboard in the same size as the television.

Step 2

Tape the cardboard to the wall so that the middle of the television is at eye level when sitting.

Step 3

Sit and look at the cardboard to determine if it is the appropriate level. Also make sure that it does not interfere with the flow of the room, such as being in a pathway.

Step 4

Reposition the cardboard until it is placed at the perfect height for you and your family.

Step 5

Mark the location of the cardboard on the wall using a pencil.
