How to Calculate the Viewing Distance for an LCD TV

By Carter McBride

When you buy an LCD television, you need to be sure you put it at the proper viewing distance in order to get the best out of your television. There is a minimum and maximum viewing distance you can calculate. After you perform the calculation, you can set up your couch or bed to the appropriate distance. This will provide the best picture clarity for your investment in your television. In order to perform the calculation, you need to know your television size.

Step 1

Determine the size of your television. For this example, assume a 50 inch LCD television.

Step 2

Divide the LCD television size by 7.9 to find the minimum distance. In the example, 50 inches divided by 7.9 equals about 6.3 feet.

Step 3

Divide the LCD television size by 4 to determine the maximum distance. In the example, 50 inches divided by 4 equals about 12.5 feet.
