How to Change a NetGear Router's Password

By Sarai Jeremiah

When you set up a NetGear router for the first time, you are given a default user name and password to manage your wireless network. Because this information is not private, anyone can log on to your network or router manager and compromise your security. Change your NetGear router's default password to a unique password to assure that no one can access your network without your knowledge.

Step 1

Go to RouterLogin.com to log in to your NetGear Router Manager.

Step 2

Enter "admin" in the "Username" field and "password" in the "Password" field, then click the "Submit" button. For older NetGear routers, enter "1234" in the "Password" field instead.

Step 3

Click "Wireless Settings" under the "Set Up" menu on the left-hand side of the Router Manager.

Step 4

Select the type of security encryption you want under the "Security Options" menu. This varies by model, but a description for each type of encryption is located on the right-hand side of the Router Manager.

Step 5

Click inside the "Passphrase" field to automatically clear your current password.

Step 6

Enter your new password in the "Passphrase" field, and click the "Apply" button.

Step 7

Wait for your wireless connection to restart for your new password to take effect.
