How to Change Back to Internet Explorer 7

Internet Explorer (IE) is one of the most popular Web browsers. Internet Explorer 8 includes improvements over IE7 in navigation, security and downloading speed. However, if you prefer IE7, you can roll back to it easily by uninstalling IE8.

Step 1

Uninstall Internet Explorer 8 to roll back automatically to IE7. To uninstall IE8, click the Windows "Start" button and click the "Control Panel."

Step 2

Click "Programs" and click "Programs and Features" to launch the installed programs window if you are using Windows Vista or 7. If you are using Windows XP, double-click "Add or Remove Programs" to launch the installed programs window.

Step 3

Click the "Show updates" check box if you are using Windows XP or "View installed updates" if you are using Windows Vista or 7. Scroll down the window and click "Internet Explorer 8." Click "Remove/Uninstall" to remove the Web browser from your computer. When prompted, restart your computer. Internet Explorer will automatically roll back to IE7 when you uninstall IE8.

Step 4

Verify that your are now using IE7. To do so, click the Windows "Start" button and click "Internet Explorer" to launch the Web browser. Click the "Help" menu on the top and click "About Internet Explorer." You should see IE7.

Tips & Warnings

  • If you installed Service Pack 3 on your Windows XP computer, uninstall the update from the installed programs list before removing IE8. You will not be able to uninstall IE8 before uninstalling Service Pack 3.
