How to Change Docx to Doc

By Maureen Bruen

If you are using Microsoft Office (2007 or 2010), then you are saving word processing documents with the .docx extension. To change .docx to .doc, simply save the .docx word processing file in the .doc format. The .doc format is used for earlier versions of Microsoft Word, and each new release of Microsoft Word allows you to save files in the earlier word processing formats. Simply open one of your Microsoft Word 2007 or 2010 documents, and use the "Save As" feature to change it to .doc format.

Step 1

Open a document using "Microsoft Word 2007 or 2010."

Step 2

Click "File," "Save As" and the "Save As" dialog box is displayed.

Step 3

Click the "Save as type" drop-down menu and select "Word 97-2003 Document."

Step 4

Click the "Save" button and the "Microsoft Word Compatibility Checker" is displayed informing you of the conversion performed to make this change.

Step 5

Click "Continue," and your .docx file is saved to .doc.
