How to Change iPhone Text Tones

By Samantha James

The iPhone is a fantastic tool for communicating with friends and family. Besides the obvious function of making phone calls, you can send pictures, email, instant messages, and text messages depending on your preference. The iPhone will vibrate or make a noise when you receive a new text message. If you do not like the default tone that the iPhone is set to make, it is very easily changed with a few swipes and taps of your finger.

Step 1

Press the “Home” button on your iPhone. It is right below the screen and is marked with a rounded white square. This will bring your phone to the main menu screen.

Step 2

Locate the “Settings” icon on the screen. It will have a picture of small, metallic gears on a gray background. Tap the icon with your fingertip.

Step 3

Scroll down the to “Sounds” option and select it.

Step 4

Tap the “New Text Message” option from the menu. It will also list the name of your current text message alert sound.

Step 5

Choose a new tone from the list. By tapping on the name of the sound, you will hear a sample. When you are finished, press the “Home” button again to take you back to the main screen.

Tips & Warnings

  • If you are in a quiet environment such as a movie theater or doctor's office, it is better to have your phone on vibrate, or to turn off all the alert options. Alert sounds can create an annoying distraction, so be considerate.
