How to Change the Resolution on an AVI File

By Greyson Ferguson

AVI is a popular Windows format that is used by a variety of video-editing programs. AVI files are typically uncompressed and are rather large in terms of storage space. If you want to save the file to the Internet or another program that requires a smaller file size, you need to adjust the resolution of the AVI file so the file size is smaller. Although you can make the resolution better, the image becomes more pixelated.

Things You'll Need

  • Computer
  • Video editor

Step 1

Launch the video editor installed on your computer. Most computers come preinstalled with some sort of video editor, such as iMovie or Windows Movie Maker.

Step 2

Click "File," "Import" and select the AVI file from the selection window.

Step 3

Select the AVI file and drag it into the timeline. Once in the timeline, you can export it with a different resolution.

Step 4

Click "Edit," then "Export." A small export window appears in the middle of the screen.

Step 5

Give the file a title and select a save location in the middle of the window. Select "AVI" as your output format, then click "Options." A Video Options menu appears. In that menu, you can find a resolution editor. Select the resolution size you want. The smaller the resolution size, the smaller the size of the video.

Step 6

Click "OK" to apply the options, then click "Save" and the AVI file is saved.
