How to Change the Task Bar Icon Size

The Windows taskbar, which is the bar that runs across the bottom of your Windows display, keeps useful applications and information at your fingertips. It is where the "Start" button is located, and you can add shortcut icons to the programs you use most frequently. There are many ways in which you can change and customize the taskbar, such as increasing or decreasing the size of its icons.

  • Windows XP, Vista or 7

Change the Taskbar Icon Size in XP or Vista

Step 1

Right-click the taskbar. Click "Lock the Taskbar" if there is a check mark beside it. This will unlock the taskbar so that you can make changes. If there is not a check mark beside "Lock the Taskbar," it is already unlocked.

Step 2

Right-click a blank area of the "Quick Launch" section of the taskbar, which is just to the right of the "Start" button.

Step 3

Point to "View." If "Large Icons" has a check mark next to it, click on "Small Icons" to change the task bar icons to a smaller size. If "Small Icons" is selected, click "Large Icons."

Step 4

Right-click the taskbar and select "Lock Taskbar."

Step 1

Right-click the taskbar. Click "Lock the Taskbar" if there is a check mark beside it. This will unlock the taskbar so that you can make changes. If there is not a check mark beside "Lock the Taskbar," it is already unlocked.

Step 2

Right-click the taskbar again and select "Properties." The "Taskbar and Start Menu Properties" dialog box will open. Make sure you are on the "Taskbar" tab.

Step 3

Click the "Use Small Icons" check box. If the box is already selected, the icons will change to a larger size. If not, they will change to a smaller size.

Step 4

Right-click the taskbar and select "Lock Taskbar."
