How to Change Your iPhone 3G APN Settings

By Mandy Slake

Before your iPhone can access a new carrier's cellular data network, you will need to change the APN settings on the device. Every GSM carrier has a specific APN, or Access Point Name, assigned to its cellular network. You can usually find this setting by contacting your carrier or checking the support section of the service provider's website. Once you know the APN, you can change the setting through the iPhone's menu system.

Step 1

Touch the "Settings" icon on the iPhone main screen.

Step 2

Tap "General" and select "Network."

Step 3

Touch "Cellular Data Network." This setting is called "Edge" if your iPhone iOS version is lower than 2.0.

Step 4

Tap the "APN" field and type your carrier's APN.

Step 5

Press the "Home" button to save the settings and return to the main screen.

Tips & Warnings

  • Depending on your carrier, you may also need to type a username and password in the Cellular Data Network screen. Check with your carrier's technical support department to find out if you need to change these settings.
