How to Charge an iPhone That Won't Turn On

By Whitney Coy

An iPhone that won't turn on may be plagued with one of many problems. The first area to troubleshoot is a dead battery. If a dead battery is your issue, you can charge the iPhone without turning it on. If the battery is completely dead, it will need to charge for two to three minutes before you will see the low-battery warning on the screen and another two to three minutes before you can use it. To charge an iPhone that won't turn on, use one of the same three methods you would use to charge an iPhone that is turned on.

Things You'll Need

  • Dock connector to USB cable
  • USB power adapter
  • iPhone car charger

Step 1

Plug your iPhone into an electrical outlet using the USB adapter and dock connector to USB cable that were packaged with your iPhone. Plug the dock end of the cable into your iPhone and the USB end of the cable into the power adapter. Plug the power adapter into the outlet. Wait 10 to 15 minutes and attempt to turn on the iPhone by pressing the "On/Off Sleep/Wake" button on the top of the device.

Step 2

Plug the iPhone into your computer using the dock connector to USB cable that was packaged with your iPhone. Plug the dock end of the cable into your iPhone and the USB end of the cable into the power adapter. Wait 10 to 15 minutes and attempt to turn on the iPhone by pressing the "On/Off Sleep/Wake" button on the top of the device. Do not plug your iPhone into a computer that is low on power or on sleep mode, as it will drain power from your iPhone instead of charging it.

Step 3

Plug the iPhone into your car using an iPhone car charger. Plug the dock end of the charger into the dock end of your iPhone and the other end of the charger into the cigarette lighter/electrical outlet in your car. Wait 10 to 15 minutes and attempt to turn on the iPhone by pressing the "On/Off Sleep/Wake" button on the top of the device.
