How to Check Previous Sales on eBay

By Ed Oswald

Using eBay's search function to look through previous sales on the site can be an invaluable resource. For example, it can provide you with guidance as a seller as to what previous items have sold for on the site, giving a clearer picture of what you may get for your item at auction. Conversely, as a buyer, these searches will give you a clearer picture on how much you may need to bid in order to win your desired item. An eBay account is needed to complete the search.

Things You'll Need

  • eBay account

Step 1

Sign in to your eBay account. If you do not have an account with eBay, register for one by clicking the "Register" link on the top left hand corner of the page.

Step 2

Click on "Advanced Search" from the main eBay page. This link may also be found on some other pages on the site close to the search box.

Step 3

Enter the item number of a previously sold item, if you know it. If not, enter keywords that describe the item that you are looking for. If you would like to exclude keywords from your search, enter them in the next box.

Step 4

Select a desired category to search within if you would like to narrow your search. In the next section, check "Completed listings."

Step 5

Narrow your search further by entering a price range in the following section. Leave the Auction types section blank, and make selections in the "Show results" section as needed.

Step 6

Click "Search." eBay will search through its listings and return results related to your search.

Tips & Warnings

  • Do not make your searches overly narrow. Use broad keywords and as few options as possible. Unlike searching for things to bit on, the purpose of checking previous sales is to get as good of an idea as possible of what items are selling for. You are going to want more results in these searches for maximum benefit.
  • You can save your searches for later reference in My eBay. To do so, in Step 3 click "Save this search to My eBay" under the category selection option.
