How to Check the ESN for a Sprint Phone

By Cassandra Tribe

The FCC requires that each cell phone have a unique electronic serial number (ESN) associated with it or a Mobile Electronic Identifier Number (MEI or MEID). This is how the service provider knows to provide cell phone service to your cell phone. If your phone is lost or stolen, the ESN is used to track the phone and/or to shut off service to that device (but not to your phone number which can be assigned to another device). You can check the ESN for your Sprint phone easily.

Things You'll Need

  • Sprint cell phone
  • Pen and paper

Step 1

Power on your phone and wait for it to connect with the Sprint network.

Step 2

Select "Menu" and then "Phone Info."

Step 3

Scroll down the list until you see the heading ESN or MEI followed by a string of numbers. This is your electronic serial number. If you cannot find the number, go to step 4.

Step 4

Remove the battery from your phone.

Step 5

Look at the inside of your phone and locate the identification plate. This will be a silver in color metal tag inset into the phone.

Step 6

Copy down the ESN or MEI listed on the identification plate.
