Step

Scan your laptop with "Scan Disk" for any bad sectors. Go to "My Computer" on the desktop. Right-click your hard drive (C). Choose "Properties" on the menu. Click "check now" under the tools tab. Select both options that appear. Choose "yes" to run "Scan Disk" the next time your computer starts.

Step

Backup all files and data that you wish to keep. This is crucial because you want to ensure that you do not lose any important information in the process of cleaning your hard drive.

Step

Delete any software that you no longer use. Open up the "Control Panel" by going to "Start." Click on "Add or Remove Programs." Scroll through the list for any programs that you wish to uninstall.

Step

Download and install the Hard Drive PowerWash system optimization software (See Resource No. 2 below). Run the program and select the options that allow you to delete files. This program will allow your computer to run faster and clean-up space.
