How to Clean Up a Microsoft PC

If your Microsoft PC is running more slowly than usual, chances are it needs a thorough cleanup. Unused programs, temporary files and file fragments all contribute to slow performance and wasted disk space. Windows offers a number of useful tools, such as Disk Cleanup and Disk Defragmenter, to clean up your Microsoft PC and increase its performance. Run these tools at least once per month, or any time you notice a decrease in your PC's performance.

Disk Cleanup

Step 1

Click the "Start" button.

Step 2

Highlight "All Programs" and "System Tools." Click "Disk Cleanup" to open the utility.

Step 3

Click on the drive you want to clean up, and click "OK".

Step 4

Check the boxes of the items you wish to delete under the "Disk Cleanup" tab. Click "OK" and "Delete Files" to begin the cleanup process.

Defragment the Hard Disk

Step 1

Click "Start", and highlight "All Programs".

Step 2

Highlight "Accessories" and "System Tools." Click "Disk Defragmenter".

Step 3

Click "Defragment Now" to begin defragmenting. This may take some time to complete, especially if you use the PC at the same time. .
