How to Clear Chat History on Facebook

By Joshua Phillips

Facebook allows you to keep in touch with friends through a variety of methods: posting on their Facebook page, sending them a message or chatting with them through an instant messaging program. As you chat, Facebook records your chat history in a log. This log keeps a record of every conversation you have for when you need to reference something discussed earlier. However, if having Facebook keep a record of your private conversations is unnerving, you can delete your chat history with a few easy steps.

Step 1

Sign in to your Facebook account.

Step 2

Click the name of a friend, located on the right side of the screen, whose chat history you want to delete. A chat window between you and that friend opens.

Step 3

Click the gear-shaped icon in the upper right corner of the chat window to open the "Actions" menu, then click "See Full Conversation."

Step 4

Click the "Actions" drop-down menu and choose "Delete Messages."

Step 5

Click "Delete All," followed by "Delete Conversation" to completely clear your chat history with that contact.

Tips & Warnings

  • When you delete your chat history, it is permanently deleted, so make sure to copy any important information before deleting it, if need be.
