How to Clear Computer Logs

Every time something happens on your computer, a log of that activity is kept. These logs can be extremely useful for troubleshooting and reporting purposes, but unfortunately those logs can grow quite large over time. When the logs grow too large it may be necessary to clear them out so that newer and more relevant information can be recorded. Clearing your computer logs is not difficult, but it is important to use the proper procedures.

Step 1

Log on to your computer and click on the "Start" button. Choose "Control Panel" from the menu.

Step 2

Double-click on the "Administrative Tools" applet and choose "Event Viewer" from the menu. The Event Viewer window will open.

Step 3

Review the logs for any information you need to know. Click on the Application, Security and System logs to gather any relevant information. After you have reviewed the information, click on the "Action" menu and choose "Clear All Events" from the menu. This will clear everything from the log so that new information can be written.
