How to Clear Pop Up's on My Computer

By Anne Wood

A pop-up is a window that opens on your screen as you are viewing content on a website. Usually these pop-ups appear out of nowhere. A main reason you have a pop-up on your screen is that you have clicked a link on a web page. The pop-ups are usually a form of advertising. Some popups might display fake warnings that your computer is infected with a virus, tricking you into clicking a link to purchase their software. You can clear pop-ups by turning on the pop-up blocker built into the web browser you use.

Internet Explorer

Step 1

Open Internet Explorer by clicking the icon on the desktop. Alternately, click the Windows-logo button, click "All Programs," and then click "Internet Explorer."

Step 2

Click "Tools" from the menu bar at the top, and click "Pop-up Blocker." Click "Turn On Pop-up Blocker" from the side menu. Internet Explorer Pop-up blocker automatically turns on. Most pop-ups will be blocked with this setting.

Step 3

Stop all pop-ups by clicking "Tools" from the menu bar at the top, click "Pop-up Blocker," and then click "Pop-up Blocker Settings." Select "High: Block all pop-ups" under Filter level. Click "Close" to save the settings.

Firefox

Step 1

Click the Firefox button at the top of the screen, and then click "Options."

Step 2

Select the "Content" tab at the top. Check the "Block pop-up windows" check box.

Step 3

Click the "Exceptions" button to add a site to the exceptions list. Enter the URL (web address) in the Address of Website field, and click "Close" to save the changes.
