How to Close a Browser Window Opened by Internet Explorer

By Julius Vandersteen

Internet Explorer is a free web browser made by Microsoft. You can use it to visit your favorite websites and surf the Internet by following links to different sites. Sometimes websites that are supported by advertising will open a new browser window without you doing anything. These "pop-up" windows are designed by the advertisers to make you look at their ads, even if only for a fraction of second before you close them. You can easily close a browser window opened by Internet Explorer.

Step 1

Click the "Start" button, then type "Internet Explorer," and then click on "Internet Explorer" to launch the browser.

Step 2

Browse the Internet. Keep an eye out for browser windows that open unexpectedly when you visit sites that are supported by pop-up advertising.

Step 3

Click on the "X" button on the browser window to close it if you want to use your mouse.

Step 4

Press the "Ctrl" key and the "W" key simultaneously on the keyboard to close the window if you want to use the keyboard.

Tips & Warnings

  • Click the "Tools" button, then click "Internet Options," and then click on the "Privacy" tab if you want Internet Explorer to prevent pop-up windows from opening. Click in the "Turn on Pop-up Blocker" check box to select it, and then click "OK."
