How to Compare Word Documents Side by Side

By Techwalla Contributor

If you find yourself needing to compare two Word documents, you can open them both and simply keep switching back and forth. To make working with the two documents easier, select to view them side by side.

Things You'll Need

  • Microsoft Word

Step 1

Open the two documents you want to compare.

Step 2

Click "Window" or "View" from the top menu bar, depending on which version of Word you are using.

Step 3

Click "Compare Side by Side With" or "View Side by Side." If you have more than two documents open, a dialog box will open allowing you to choose your second document.

Step 4

Select your second document. You will see a "Compare Side by Side" toolbar. The "Synchronous Scrolling" will allow you to scroll through both documents at the same time.

Step 5

Reset your documents to their original position by clicking the "Reset Window Position" button.

Step 6

Click "Close Side by Side" when you are finished comparing your documents.
