How to Connect a VCR to a Digital TV

By James Clark

Connecting a VCR to a digital TV requires two sets of composite audio-video cables to hook up the VCR between a source signal, such as a satellite receiver or digital converter box, and the television. With this setup, the VCR can be used to record programming from the source for later enjoyment on the TV, but it's important to know that even if connected to a digital or high-definition TV signal, the VCR can only record and play back tapes in standard definition.

Things You'll Need

  • 2 sets of composite cables
  • Source signal, such as a satellite receiver, cable box or converter box

Step 1

Hook up the three colored plugs on one end of a composite cable to the VCR's input (record) jacks, matching the plugs to the jack colors.

Step 2

Connect the plugs on the other end to the three AV output jacks on the source signal, such as a cable box or satellite receiver.

Step 3

Attach the second set of cables from the three AV out (playback) jacks on the VCR to a set of AV input jacks on the back panel of the digital TV.

Step 4

Turn on the equipment and press the "Input" or "Source" button on the TV repeatedly until the VCR signal appears on the screen.

Tips & Warnings

  • Connect the AV cables before plugging the components into the electricity.
