How to Convert a 3Gp Video File

By Alexis Lawrence

3GP files are audio and video files commonly used on portable devices, such as mobile phones, and also for file sharing on the Internet. Though 3GP files can be read by many standard media players like RealPlayer and Quicktime, the 3GP file type is not as widely recognized in video editing software. If you have a 3GP video file you would like to be able to edit in a video editing software, you will first need to convert the 3GP to a standard editing format like AVI or MOV.

Step 1

Go to the Media-Convert online converter. Media-Convert's free converter converts files and is able to read and convert 3GP.

Step 2

Import the 3GP video file. To import the file, click "Browse" beside the "File" box. Locate the 3GP file on your computer and click the "Open" button.

Step 3

Select 3GP next to "Input format." Media-Convert should auto-detect the 3GP file. If it doesn't, you can select it from the list.

Step 4

Select an output format. You can convert 3GP into many different file types in the Media-Convert converter, including AVI, MPG and MOV. Select the file type of your choice.

Step 5

Name the converted file. To rename a file in Media-Convert, type a name into the box next to "Rename file to." If you do not include a file name, Media-Convert will automatically use the same name as the original 3GP file.

Step 6

Click "OK" to convert. The "OK" button is a small blue button at the right of the converter screen. This will begin the conversion. Media-Convert monitors the conversion progress on screen. When it is finished, you will be redirected to a screen that includes a download link for your converted file. Click the link and save the converted file to your computer.
