How to Convert a TIFF to PDF Format

By Marshal M. Rosenthal

The Portable Document File (PDF) format allows anyone to view a file without needing the program in which it was originally created. You can convert a Tagged Image File Format (TIFF) graphic file into a PDF file so that the graphic file can be viewed. A graphics program and a PDF viewing program will convert the TIFF file for you, as will a graphics conversion website. Many of these methods for converting a TIFF file to PDF are free or free to use on a trial shareware basis, and are available for both PC and Mac computers.

Graphics Program

Step 1

Download and install a graphics program to the computer's desktop--for example, the free shareware version of GraphicConverter for a Mac or the free shareware version of Photoscape for a PC (see Resources). Restart your PC after the installation is done.

Step 2

Double-click on the icon of the graphics program from inside the "Applications" folder if on a Mac or select it from the pop-up menu by going to "Start > All Applications" if on a PC.

Step 3

Drag the TIFF file from the computer's hard drive onto the icon of the graphics program--the icon will be in the Dock to the left or at the bottom of the screen if on a Mac or in the Toolbar at the bottom right of the screen if on a PC.

Step 4

Wait as the TIFF file loads into the graphicsp rogram and displays itself in a window on the screen.

Step 5

Go to "File" and select "Save As" from the drop-down menu. Name the PDF file you are about to make in the "Name" column at the top of the window that appears. Select "Desktop" from the "Locations" drop-down menu at the middle of the window. Select "PDF" from the "File Format" drop-down menu that is beneath "Locations."

Step 6

Click the "Save" button at the bottom of the window to save the TIFF file to the desktop as a PDF file. Quit the graphics program. Archive or delete the TIFF file.

Conversion Website

Step 1

Go to a graphics conversion website--for example, the free Media-Convert or Media Converter (see Resources). Click on the "Browse" button next to the "File" tab on the webpage. Select the TIFF file from the list of choices presented in a new window on the screen. Double-click on the TIFF file to close the window.

Step 2

Select "Tagged Image File Format" from the "Input format" drop-down menu that is across from the "File" tab. Click the "OK" button that is across from the "Input format" tab.

Step 3

Select "PDF" from the "Output file" drop-down menu in the new window that appears. Click the "Convert" button. Wait as a progress bar appears on the web page and fills in from left to right. Click the "OK" button when the progress bar is completely filled in.

Step 4

Click the "Save" button on the new web page that has appeared. Name the PDF file with the same name as the TIFF file in the "Name" column at the top of the window that appears.

Step 5

Select "Desktop" from the "Locations" drop-down menu in the center of the window. Click the "Save" button at the bottom of the window. Archive or delete the TIFF file.

PDF Viewing Program

Download and install a PDF viewing and editing program to the computer's desktop--for example, the trial version of the Adobe Acrobat, which you can use on both Mac and PCs (see Resources). Restart your PC after the installation has finished.

Step 2

Double-click the icon of the PDF program that is inside of the "Applications" folder if on a Mac or select it from the pop-up menu by going to "Start > All Applications" if on a PC.

Step 3

Drag the TIFF file from the computer's hard drive onto the icon of the PDF viewing program--you will find the icon in the Dock at the left or bottom of the screen if on a Mac, or in the Toolbar at the bottom of the screen on the right side if using a PC.

Step 4

Wait for the picture of the TIFF file to appear on the screen inside of a window.
