How to Convert a Ubuntu Server to Desktop

By Kristen Waters

The Ubuntu Linux Server distribution does not come with a graphical desktop. When you log into the server you are only provided with a command line (terminal). The server also does not come with any productivity software such as Open Office or Evolution. The Ubuntu developers have compiled a package called the "ubuntu-desktop," which contains all of the software installed with the desktop version but not the server version.

Step 1

Type the command "sudo apt-get update" to update your system.

Step 2

Type the command "sudo apt-get install ubuntu-desktop" to install the desktop packages.

Step 3

Type the command "reboot" to reboot the computer.

Tips & Warnings

  • If you want to install the KDE desktop, type the command "sudo apt-get install kubuntu-desktop" in step two.
