How to Convert a WMA to an MP3 in Windows Media Player

By Wesley DeBoy

Windows Media Player does not provide an option to directly convert a WMA file into an MP3 file. However, you can convert a WMA to an MP3 by first burning the WMA to a CD with Windows Media Player and then ripping that CD with Windows Media Player in an MP3 format.

Things You'll Need

  • Computer
  • Windows Media Player
  • Blank CD-R

Step 1

Open Windows Media Player.

Step 2

Click the "Burn" tab.

Step 3

Drag the WMA file you would like to convert to MP3 into the burn list located on the right-hand side of Windows Media Player.

Step 4

Click the "Start Burn" tab in the lower right-hand corner of Windows Media Player.

Step 5

Insert a Blank CD-R into your computer and Windows Media Player will automatically start burning the disc.

Step 6

Hover your mouse over "Rip" when Windows Media Player has finished burning the CD and click the downward pointing arrow that appears below the "Rip" button. Select "Format" and choose "MP3" from the drop down menu that appears.

Step 7

Click the "Rip" button and then click the "Start Rip" button in the bottom right-hand corner of Windows Media Player.

Step 8

Eject the CD when Windows Media Player has finished ripping audio from the CD. You have now successfully converted a WMA to an MP3 in Windows Media Player.
